On most days off, Nikita liked to leave Mauville City for the fresh air of Route 111. She hiked it routinely, getting exercise and exposure to the outdoors. Despite running into the occasional traveler, she enjoyed the excursion for its peaceful solitude. Her job as the regional director of her parents' company meant she was almost always on her phone, tablet, or computer. Though she liked urban life and spending time indoors, sometimes she needed to unplug and get away from it all.[break][break]

That particular day was sunny and hot, though a breeze blowing through brought refreshing coolness. Accompanying Nikita was her Onix, the gigantic Pokémon leisurely enjoying the sun and occasional snack of boulders. She herself was seated in the shade of a tree, taking a break from her walk for some water and some trail mix she had brought with her.[break][break]

"It must feel good to stretch, hmm?" she idly commented to the Rock Snake Pokémon. He rumbled in response but did not move from where he lay.

Nikita watched a wild Turtonator waddle past at a safe distance to drink from a pond. The body of water was small enough not to make her uncomfortable, but she still avoided it. She did not want to disturb any Water-type Pokémon living there, lest they suddenly attack her or Onix. And the Rock Snake Pokémon was not suited for fending off against them.[break][break]

"Shall we continue our walk?" Nikita asked her enormous companion, stuffing her things into her backpack before standing.[break][break]

He rumbled again and lifted his head from the ground. She knew that no matter her speed, he would not need to move far or quickly to keep pace with her, so she ambled down the gentle slope at a leisurely pace.

The rhythmic clatter of hoofbeats heralded the approach of a wild Rapidash. He trotted into view, his beautiful mane of pure flame tossed by the breeze. Nikita faltered mid-step at the sight of him. Memories surged through her, one after the other. First, her beginner lessons on the back of a gentle Ponyta. Then an older and more confident Nikita cantering around a field, learning to jump. Then her teenage self on the back of a Rapidash, wearing a black dressage uniform, proudly holding a first place trophy.[break][break]

In the present, Nikita watched the wild Rapidash stop a few yards away. Unafraid, he lowered his head to eat the grass. Subconsciously, she clutched at her prosthetic arm with her right hand.[break][break]

Another memory surfaced.[break][break]

"I sold the horses, of course. What do you mean, 'why'? Look at you. You won't be able to ride again like that. Even if you get the prosthetics, do you think we would allow you to put yourself in danger again? I looked up the statistics for horseback riding injuries. It's better this way."[break][break]

Nikita swallowed hard against the flashback. Why had she let her parents dictate so much of her life? Why hadn't she resumed riding after becoming an adult? Was she really their pawn that all she could do was comply? Even her secret business selling goods on the black market seemed like a teenager's rebellious phase instead of something substantial.[break][break]

Who was she, really?[break][break]

"Onix, ROCK SLIDE." The command came out choked with emotion, but if the enormous Pokémon noticed or cared, he did not give any indication. Instead, he smashed his tail into the unsuspecting Rapidash. Nikita followed up with a thrown Pokéball.
